Massage therapists are now everywhere, including homes, offices, spas, and salons.  Their goal is to provide the gift of massage to make people feel better.  They received their certification through taking classes; thus massage therapists are educated and trained people.  They utilize their time by accurately assessing and treating those who are seriously affected by daily tension and stress.

Massage therapists are trained in the assessment and diagnosis of soft tissue and joints of the body.  They are also knowledgeable in the prevention and treatment of any form of injury, pain, or physical problems.  Having knowledge of these areas, a massage therapist is able to treat the symptoms of pain and dysfunction.  Most of them even massage deeper to find and treat the underlying causes of whatever pain the person is suffering from.

Common Tasks of a Massage Therapist

A massage therapist performs many different tasks for their clients.  All of these tasks are highly considered for relaxation and remedial purposes.  Included in the list are the following:

* Work on the soft tissues of the human body through massage.  A therapist simply massages the muscles, tendons, and ligaments to assist healing of whatever pain their client is experiencing.
* A massage therapist must use massage techniques to enhance relaxation and well-being.
* Techniques like muscle stretching must be utilized by a massage therapist to help the receiver enhance the muscle performance and assist recovery.
* A therapist should use finger pressure techniques in shiatsu, reflexology, and other forms of therapy.

Working Areas of Massage Therapists

Massage therapists specialize in different areas.  However, they generally they work in three broad areas: remedial, relaxation, and sports massage.  Listed below are the 3 main area of massage:

* Remedial Massage - This area is a paramedical massage treatment.  The massage therapists working in this area perform their tasks to assist their clients in healing parts of their body that have been injured or left inactive due to age, illness, and injury.

* Relaxation Massage - In this type of massage, the massage therapists combine techniques to promote relaxation.  The techniques involved at this area of practice also improve circulation, relieve muscle tension, and increase range of movement.

* Sports Massage - Just like relaxation massage, this area combines different massage techniques to improve the person’s performance and recuperation in sports, and to prevent injury as well.  The therapist who works in the area applies pre-event, post-event and maintenance techniques.

Personal Requirements

Certain requirements are necessary for someone to be an effective massage therapist.  One of the most important is for the massage therapist to be in good health and physical condition.  This is very important, as massage therapists will be associating with people who wish to be healthy.  Additionally, a therapist must be caring and display a positive attitude.  Most importantly, he or she must be genuinely interested in helping the clients overcome their physical problems.
