Soothe Your Tired Feet with a Foot Massage

The feet are often the most neglected or ignored part of our body.  Hutched up in socks and shoes all day, the feet rarely get the chance to be out in the open.  Also, standing on your feel all day can contribute to the development small twinges and discomforts that often go untreated.  Overtime, the feet become sore and need to be treated.  Giving someone close to you a foot massage would be a nice gift.

What is Foot Massage?

The theory of foot massage is quite simple, but putting into practice is far more complex than other therapeutic techniques.  Foot massage is sometimes associated with the concept of reflexology, which is pressure therapy that involves applying a focused pressure to the particularly known reflex points in the foot to cure any form of  discomfort.   However, it is important to note that foot massage is not the same as foot reflexology.  In foot reflexology, some of its benefits will happen automatically by virtue of massaging the feet.  However, for foot massage, the main goal is to relieve the discomfort of the tired feet.

How to Give a Foot Massage

Generally, there are no documented medical benefits for giving someone a foot massage.  However, if the massage is applied correctly and properly, the person receiving the massage will feel a sense of relief, well being, and peace.

First of all, it is very important to make sure that you have the correct supplies for the foot massage.  Typically, what you will need are 2 or 3 big towels and a type of lubricant.  For many, a rich cream works best for the tough calluses and the hardened skin of the feet than the hand lotion or oil.  If a rich cream is not available, you can also use other lotions or even oils as any of these will work.

Thoroughly wash the person's feet and cover them with a skin lotion for lubrication before performing the foot massage.  Start rubbing the sole of their foot with your thumbs.  You can do this by simply working your thumbs in a circular motion all the way from the heel to the base of the toes.  However, a lot of people are sensitive and ticklish on their feet.  If this is the case, reassure the receiver that you will use firm, slow strokes rather than light and quick ones.  Make him or her as comfortable as possible.

During the foot massage, take each toe individually and place it between your thumb and forefinger.  Gently manipulate it and give it a slight tug at the end.  Then, gently press your fingers into the person’s foot all along the sole.  At the end of the foot massage, simply run your fingers along the top of the receiver's foot to provide a relaxing feeling.  After you have completed the first foot, move on to the next foot.

When applying the foot massage, please note that you should use more oils as needed, but do not use to much of it for this will only cause your hands to slide, which could detract from the comfort of the receiver.
